Link building is one of the most important factors when ranking a site in the search engines. Without other sites linking to you, the search engines will have a hard time finding your site to index. Search engines consider links as votes, when another site links to yours the search engines see that as someone voting for your site and its relevance to your industry. So the more links you obtain, the higher the search engines will value the relevancy of your site, and thus it will rank higher in the search engines.

There are many ways to build links for your website, here are some:

Reciprocal Links - this is the more common way to build to link popularity. It is done by exchanging links with other websites, i.e. they give you a link from their site, and in return you provide them with a link from your site, this is not as effective as it used to be but is still worth while exchanging links with related sites.

One way links - this is when sites link to you because they deem your site relevant and helpful to their visitors, and do not require anything in return. Although extra links help increase search engine rankings, they can also bring in some great traffic themselves.
